Here's an example few would follow. Here in Canada, where the ruling Liberals have been tainted by prior office-bearers giving money to friends and the party receiving kick-backs, wouldn't it be refreshing if they sought to balance this by taking salary cuts. I doubt if the thought entered too many of their minds. Yet, in Bolivia, that's just what the new government plans to do: halve the president's and cabinet ministers' salaries, and put the money saved towards social programs. We'll see how they do in the long run but this is a pretty good start - and so un-American! After all, people do things for profit (or perhaps because they'll go to heaven) but giving up half your salary, that questions the very foundation of the profit motive. Could it be that there's another way?
Anyway, this is what the new government of Evo Morales has done. He's also planning on easing restrictions on coca growing - and nationalizing the gas industry. Hmmm . . . He won't go to heaven for that - or will he?
